Mobile Internet services have many advantages. Unlike the traditional “wired” internet, mobile internet services will go where users go. No longer will users have to remember to do something on the Internet when they get back to their computer. They can do it immediately, within the context that made them want to use the Internet in the first place.
Objective 1: Increase Awareness of W3C’s Work on Mobile Web Applications in Europe
European actors in the software industry and the mobile Internet services domain need to be targeted in order to be informed about the goals, potential and results of W3C’s work on mobile Web applications. Dissemination should particularly targeted towards European SMEs who often do not have the resources to directly participate in W3C activities, and thus need be informed about results by other means.

Objective 2: Increase Number of Developers Capable of Developing Mobile Web Applications
European application developers (especially in SMEs) need to targeted in order to be trained to create mobile Internet applications that are Web-based rather than using traditional native programming languages. Thereby, they can achieve significant benefits in terms of cost savings and speed of development.
Objective 3: Provide more Extensive Test Suites for Mobile Web Application Standards
Today’s Web browsers and runtimes contain a range of incompatibilities, often caused by lack of standards conformance. More extensive test suites that cover a higher percentage of Web standards targeted towards web browser manufacturers will help increase the level of standards conformance.

Objective 4: Further Strengthen European Standards Activities in Mobile Web Applications
In order for Web application technology to become a viable platform for developing mobile Internet services, further standardization of technologies targeted at Web browser manufactures is required. Moreover, while big European actors (especially from the telecoms industry) are currently quite active in the standardization of Mobile Web Applications, there is currently a lack of participation by European SMEs who need to be specifically targeted to increase their participation in standards efforts.
